PROJECT DETAILS

PROJECT NAME : Sabiha Gokcen Airport
PROJECT LOCATION : Istanbul, Turkey
PROJECT GROUP : PUBLIC
PRODUCT BRANDS USED : FİBROFOMBETON®

Sabiha Gökçen Airport’s architectural design came from the Tekeli-Sisa Architectural Partnership. Arup performed the engineering design. The international airport’s terminal building was designed to be a unique space and a functional and sustainable hub on İstanbul’s Asian side.

The basement floors are made of concrete and everything above them is fully built with steel. The high and spacious main hall is closed with seven roof vaults on the outside. The vaults are 32 and 48 meters apart from each other and together they create a huge wave form which was the fulcrum of the architectural design. The terminal’s hard surfaces, other than the glass panels, all walls, and all columns were clad with FİBROFOMBETON® façade panels.

At the terminal and the hotel blocks, we used 12-20 mm thick glass fiber reinforced concrete shells. These panels have steel frames behind them.

We constructed them by filling them with foam concrete with a density of 250-350 kg/ square cube. More than 4000 panels were installed on the steel structure with specially designed anchorage hardware.

The panels are 18 cm thick including the foam concrete insulation and we opted for double joint rings at the grouts. The surfaces are either smooth or coarse and they were painted after the assemblage.

“With more than 4000 FİBROFOMBETON® panels used in the project, the integrity of the architecture was ensured and the wavy form was applied exactly.”
